Modulation of Brain Aging through Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle: Nutribrain Call for Research Projects

Research into brain aging

The goal of call is supporting international research projects that focus on improving cognitive brain aging through nutrition and other lifestyle factors. The research must contribute to one of these themes:

Gaining more insight into the modulation of brain aging by lifestyle factors New pilot interventions, or scaling up existing pilot interventions, that help to reduce the risk of cognitive decline related to pathological brain aging.

At least one of the following lifestyle factors should also be examined; nutrition (particularly improvements in diet), physical activity, sleep patterns (quantity, quality and timing), social interaction and tension.

The cognitive decline of the brain obviously also plays an important role in the onset and development of Alzheimer’s. Several years ago, an AI model was developed that can predict up to two years in advance whether patients at risk of Alzheimer’s disease will experience clinically significant cognitive decline due to the disease.

Perspective of prevention

Researchers should apply a prevention and public health perspective, considering large population groups, such as age cohorts or relevant subgroups. Applications wishing to be considered for this call may include one of the following approaches:

Pilot test interventions that will help reduce the risk of manifestations of cognitive impairment related to pathological brain aging Scaling up existing pilot interventions that help reduce the risk of cognitive impairment

In addition, the studies can also be supplemented with one of the following approaches:
Proposals can be supplemented with any of the following approaches, such as:

Mechanistic/experimental research focused on how specific lifestyle factors influence brain aging Translational research that will provide proof of concept, supporting the development of effective health improvement strategies and/or solutions to promote healthy brains.

More information about the call and all conditions is available can be found here.

Planning a remuneration

The Nutribrain call will be open on November 3. The deadline for pre-applications is set for January 15, 2024 and the successful applications will be announced in mid-October of that year. At a time yet to be determined, the European partnership ERA4Health will organize an information meeting and matchmaking around the opening of the call.

ERA4Health is a European Partnership in the European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme. The partnership aims to finance international research in the areas of cardiovascular disease, nanomedicine and nutrition, health and prevention over seven years. The European research program is a combined follow-up to ERA-CVD, EuroNanoMed and Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life. NWO and ZonMw are involved in ERA4Health from the Netherlands.
