A Djurgården Crisis: Can Johan Garpenlöv Stop the Bleeding?

A cracking derby in the Avicii Arena on Wednesday and jubilant zookeepers after 3-1 against AIK.

But on Friday they were back in everyday life.

And that fire that burned in the iron stoves was blown away one evening when they had to take the bus home without any points after 3-4 against Almtuna.

A Djurgården that has become the hockey Allsvenskan’s answer to HV71.

I wonder how Djurgården will handle the early crisis.

And how long will Johan Garpenlöv survive if he doesn’t stop the bleeding.

The awakening after the derby victory against AIK was brutal, although I knew that Robert Kimby’s Almtuna would manage another victory,

They beat Djurgården in three out of four games last season and were still five points ahead in the table.

Now there is a difference of eight.

So it wasn’t really a big surprise, even if the animal farms were for some reason big favorites with the betting companies before the match.

Now defender Jacob Ragnarsson, son of Djurgården’s assistant coach Marcus, scored 1-0 to Almtuna already four minutes into the first period.

Frederik Schlyter equalized after a solo performance, when he took the road behind the box and drove to a free position in front of the goal, before putting the puck in behind Oliver Håkansson.

A success since he came from Brynäs

But in the second, Almtuna took the lead again, when Hampus Harlestam scored a rebound in front of goal.

Then Alexander Ljungcrantz was smartly cleared in front of the box and scored 3-1.

Daniel Brodin ignited a glimmer of hope when he reduced it to 3-2 at the end of the second.

I thought that would wake up the zoos.

It was the opposite.

Another early goal gave Almtuna 4-2 already 1.20 into the final period.

Alexander Ljungkrantz chipped in a rebound, scoring his second goal of the game and eighth overall this season.

He has been a success since he came from Brynäs.

Now Djurgården got a reduction when Daniel Brodin scored again and 4-3, but there was never any forcing as Kevin Karlsson went out with 1.36 left.

Almtuna has been a sensation so far, with a budget that is nowhere near the one Djurgården sporting director KG Stoppel has to play with.

Big fiasco team of the season

No, so far Djurgården is the hockey Allsvenskan’s big fiasco team.

It wasn’t at this end of the table they were supposed to be.

Before the season, they were third-hand favorites with Svenska Spel, just behind Brynäs and Björklöven.

It was also reflected in Sportbladet’s tips for the season, where six out of ten experts had the animal farms as third and the other tips were 1-2-4-6.

An expected top team and in this way the start is worse than the SHL’s crisis team HV71.

Just like HV71, they have had an extremely difficult time away from home and only Västervik has scored fewer points.

And as long as Djurgården find themselves where they do, coach Johan Garpenlöv will be questioned more and more.

It is inevitable.

The clock is ticking for Garpen

Don’t forget that Djurgården was third when Joakim Fagervall got the kick at the end of November last year.

Admittedly, the team had just lost four out of five games and was thirteen points behind leaders Modo.

But look at the table today.

The distance to the top is even greater.

After eleven games played.

Now a new tough away game awaits on Wednesday, against the old BIK Karlskoga, who really came to life.

It feels like the clock is ticking for Garpen and his Djurgården.

And talk about contrasts with the derby against AIK on Wednesday.

Then it was sold out and 13,250 in the stands.

This evening, 1141 had looked for Gränby Ishall, even though Djurgården was visiting.

It feels like Almtuna is worth a greater interest in a city with close to 180,000 inhabitants.

AIK bounced back quickly after the derby loss against Djurgården.

They made an impressive turnaround away to Södertälje, as they overturned a 3-1 deficit to win 4-3 on penalties in front of an impressive 6,204 spectators in Scaniarinken.

Zion Nybeck scored the decisive penalty.

This means that AIK can call itself the best in Stockholm at the moment.

They are now in seventh place.
