Promoting Health and Trust: The Success of the ‘Together at the Farm’ Project

Promoting health through social interaction and trust – that is the core aim of the “Together at the Farm” project. Over the past two weekends, two years full of positive experiences for young and old were celebrated with court festivals in Vorau and Großwilfersdorf.

VORAU/GROSSWILFERSDORF. “I think that the gap between the generations is getting wider and wider. Everyone is looked after in their own, “special” institution – in the best possible and completely professional manner. But where is there exchange between each other and how should understanding for each other be developed?”

With these thought-provoking words, Astrid Kirchsteiger from Vorau begins to explain why she and her farm decided to take part in the “Together at the Farm” project run by Styria Vitalis and Green Care Austria.

Building bridges between generations

In fact, building bridges between generations is a central focus of the project and the farm is the perfect place for this. After all, they still symbolize the coexistence of several generations under one roof.

The fact that this has increasingly become a rarity in our society, in favor of a life only in the nuclear family consisting of children and parents, also leaves the “third generation”, i.e. the grandparents, increasingly isolated and their meaningful roles in the family unit that fill them with meaning shrink.

According to the basic belief behind the “Together on the Farm” project, farms also offer a unique setting for health-promoting and social offerings – whether for older people, children or across generations. Exactly these two aspects have been the focus on four Styrian farms over the last two years.

2 times “Together at the Farm” in the district

In the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district these were the Kirchsteiger family farm in Vorau and the Fritz-Pfeiffer family farm in Großwilfersdorf. On the last two weekends, the project’s closing ceremonies took place on the two farms in Vorau and Großwilfersdorf.

Project manager Helena Buchegger from Styria Vitalis describes that what is more special about “Together at the Court” is that “health promotion took place at a low-threshold level.”

Connection creates trust

“The farm offers a wide variety of points of contact for all generations. This makes it possible to establish a connection and build trust and this is the basis for addressing health-promoting topics such as nutrition and exercise as well as promoting social participation and positive images about aging,” explains Buchegger.

And the project plan actually worked: the many people who have been involved in “Together at the Farm” over the past two years – whether as employees or as participants – have in common the experience that a farm can become an entertaining meeting place.

(Experience) community

The farms in Vorau and Großwilfersdorf each became a place that made exchange between generations possible; a place where knowledge can be acquired and passed on and where community can be experienced and lived. With all the positive consequences for health, of course.
