The Israeli military is increasing its ground operations in Gaza, a military spokesperson said. Internet and phone connections have been lost in Gaza, and Israel has stepped up airstrikes.
Qatari satellite television station Al Jazeera reported that Qatar-mediated negotiations between Israel and Hamas to reach a ceasefire agreement and hostage exchange deal are progressing “rapidly.” Hamas has so far released four hostages, and is said to have agreed to increase supplies to Israel as a condition for releasing more hostages. In response, an Israeli military spokesperson cautioned against reports that an agreement to release the hostages was imminent.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military said its navy had raided facilities along the southern coast of Gaza and destroyed Hamas’s “terrorist infrastructure,” without providing specifics. Four people were injured in a rocket attack in Tel Aviv.
According to the United Nations, only about 2% of the humanitarian aid needed has reached Gaza, and fuel shortages have prevented adequate rationing. European Union leaders have called for a pause in fighting to secure more aid and make progress in hostage negotiations with Hamas.
