This sci-fi story was originally supposed to be part of Star Citizen. During development, it became a standalone game Squadron 42. According to the original plan, the single-player part was supposed to be released in 2014, but as you can see, there was a “minor” delay. But now the Cloud Imperium Games studio is finally heading to the finish line. With a new video, they announced that the content of Squadron 42 is complete and now the team is focused on picking up all the little things and flaws. When we should expect a sharp release, but we still don’t know.
Developer Chris Roberts introduced Star Citizen back in 2012. His team’s ambitions were not small, but its concept of a space sci-fi simulator, which builds on the foundations laid by titles such as Freelancer or Wing Commander, attracted millions of players. The project received massive support in a Kickstarter campaign, and community contributions have continued with the developers selling the game’s giant spaceships for hundreds of dollars. Over the years the budget has grown tremendously and this year crossed the $600 million markwhich makes Star Citizen the most expensive game in gaming history.
While Star Citizen will be an MMO with a living world, in the development of which the players themselves intervene, Squadron 42 will it focuses on telling the film’s story. The casting of several Hollywood actors will also help him with this. You’ll see the face first in the preview Gilliany Andersonwho you may also know as Agent Scully from The X-Files. Other star names are Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman or John Rhys-Davieswho you may remember as Gimli from The Lord of the Rings. Famous names but participates significantly more in this project.
You can also see directly in the video a comparison of how Squadron 42 has changed in recent times. Perhaps every aspect is better, whether we look at lighting or character models. The game environment, whose design looks great, also took its share. Creators inspired by sci-fi classics from the 70s and 80s and added their own ideas to it. It must also be acknowledged that the background music that plays right at the beginning fits perfectly with the scenery.
Richard Tyrer, one of the directors of the game, says that his team cares about the player he felt like a spaceship pilot as much as possible. Among other things, character animations for every detail will help. It doesn’t matter if you want to pick something up from the ground, press a button or turn a faucet. Everything will have its own animation. They don’t want to disrupt the flow of the game not even loading screens or cutscenes.
Important elements such as were only briefly mentioned improved artificial intelligence, different behavior of the ship when flying on the planet and in spacemodified user interface and, last but not least, use multitoolu, which will not be missing from our equipment. It will serve, for example, as a welding machine and will also allow us to carry heavy objects. But he can definitely do more.
The release of the final version of Squadron 42 is probably still a long way off, and Star Citizen is even further away. In the near future, we should at least look forward to it more frequent updates from the developers, and content will be added to Star Citizen with a greater cadence than it has been until now.
