French President Emmanuel Macron Calls for Humanitarian Truce in Israel-Hamas Conflict

French president calls for “humanitarian truce”

French President Emmanuel Macron also called for a “humanitarian truce” in the war between Israel and Hamas to “organize the protection” of civilian populations in the Gaza Strip. “We fully recognize the right and legitimate desire to fight terrorism. We are ready to help. But we consider that the complete blockade, the indiscriminate bombardment and even more the prospect of a massive land operation are not likely to properly protect the civilian populations (…) A humanitarian truce is today useful for to be able to protect those who are on the ground, who have suffered bombings” declared the Head of State during a press conference.

It goes beyond the joint declaration of the leaders of the twenty-seven countries of the European Union, who after bitter semantic negotiations had requested “pauses” to facilitate humanitarian aid. According to the French president, the Israeli response must “better target useful action against terrorists”. “It is essential that the distinction is made from the start, very clearly, with civilian populations. Otherwise, the risk is that of conflagration, of confusion of minds. And paradoxically, I think it is also very counterproductive for Israel’s security,” he argued.

UN concerned about “war crimes” committed

The UN expressed concern on Friday that “war crimes” have been committed and are still being committed in the conflict between Israel and the Islamist movement Hamas. “We are concerned about the collective punishment inflicted on Gazans in response to the atrocious attacks by Hamas, which also constitute war crimes,” said Ravina Shamdasani, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, during the regular UN briefing in Geneva.

ICRC sends war surgery team and medical supplies to Gaza

A war surgery team and a weapons contamination specialist are among ten experts from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) who arrived in Gaza on Friday, along with six ICRC trucks carrying medical equipment and urgently needed water purification products, the humanitarian organization said in a press release on Friday. The shipment includes war surgery kits that can be used to treat between 1,000 and 5,000 people, depending on the severity of their injuries.

“This crucial humanitarian assistance is a small relief, but it is not enough. Our surgical team and medical supplies will help alleviate the extreme pressure on Gaza’s doctors and nurses. But safe and sustainable humanitarian access is urgently needed. This humanitarian catastrophe is getting worse by the hour,” underlines Fabrizio Carboni, ICRC regional director for the Near and Middle East.

Drone injures six in Egyptian border town

Six people were injured when a drone struck the Egyptian town of Taba, which borders Israel, early Friday, the Egyptian army reported. The Sinai desert peninsula is bordered at its northwest tip by the Gaza Strip and shares its eastern border with Israel.

Egypt, historic mediator between Palestinians and Israelis and which holds the only opening to the world of Gaza which is not in the hands of Israel, has found itself on the front line since October 7. On Sunday, the Israeli army announced that it had “mistakenly” fired one of its tanks on an Egyptian position on the outskirts of the Gaza Strip. Egypt reported the incident as well as the Israeli army’s apologies, reporting “light injuries” in its ranks.

57 UN workers dead in Gaza

Fifty-seven employees of the UN Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of the war between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. UNRWA boss Philippe Lazzarini confirmed this figure during a press briefing in Jerusalem.

The head of UNRWA also warned of the consequences of the water, food and fuel cuts imposed by Israel in Gaza. “Basic services are collapsing, medicines are running out, food and water are running out. As we speak, people in Gaza are dying, they are not just dying from bombs and strikes, many more will soon die from the consequences of the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip.

Israeli army ground incursion into Gaza Strip

The Israeli army announced Friday morning that its infantry had once again carried out a “targeted raid in the central sector of the Gaza Strip”, supported by “hunters and drones”, targeting Hamas objectives.

The soldiers then left the Palestinian territory without reporting any injuries, the army said in a statement. In addition to this incursion, the army said it had bombed Hamas sites “across the Gaza Strip.” It specifies having destroyed rocket launch pads, Hamas command centers, and neutralized men from the Palestinian Islamist movement.

Europeans seek to unite in the Middle East

In Brussels, the question of the conditions for the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians in the Gaza Strip was at the heart of the debates of the leaders of the European Union, meeting on Thursday. “Humanitarian truce”? “Breaks”? “Windows”? The EU heads of state and government, who all strongly condemned the Hamas attack on October 7, had to debate for several hours before reaching a consensus. “Pauses” ended up winning. A less restrictive plural because it is more vague.
