UEFA Investigation on PSG Ultras’ Pyrotechnics and Support for Palestine: Updates and Potential Sanctions

It has almost become a habit, a sort of cat and mouse game between the European body and the various groups of supporters across the continent.

The activities of the Collectif Ultras Paris were superb on Wednesday evening during PSG – AC Milan in the Champions League (3-0), particularly at kick-off when a tifo by Jean-Paul Belmondo in Professional mode was revealed to cover the whole platform. Except that the show was accompanied by smoke bombs and other fireworks, also a little later during the match, and that still does not please UEFA, which has opened an investigation according to our colleagues from Le Parisien . The same concerns followed the match against Juventus (2-1) last season, but Paris Saint-Germain escaped with a simple fine.

Barthélémy: “No closed doors for festive pyrotechnics”

We can therefore imagine and hope that it will be the same, in light of the explanations of lawyer Pierre Barthélémy at the time of rendering this decision: “Confirmation of the new UEFA disciplinary policy: no closed session for festive pyrotechnics. Behind closed doors are limited to pyro jets.” There was not even a suspended closed session, which also removes a certain pressure in relation to the opening of this new investigation. This is what caused, for example, the application of a partial closed session in Nantes after the reception of Juventus in the Europa League last season (0-3), by revocation of a reprieve.

Finally, UEFA should not sanction PSG and its supporters for the banners displayed in support of Palestine, shortly before half-time. The messages “War crime in Gaza: what is the international community doing?” as well as “Middle East: may all innocent victims rest in peace” and “Paris against all forms of terrorism” were displayed in the same Auteuil forum. As well as a tribute to the French teacher murdered in Arras two weeks ago: “Don’t touch my national education. RIP Mr. Dominique Bernard.”
