EU Meeting on Gaza Conflict: Humanitarian Pauses and Exclusion of Hamas

On Thursday, a compromise was agreed, in which the EU asks for “humanitarian pauses” in the Gaza Strip. That is why several EU leaders are also meeting on Friday to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East between Hamas and Israel.

But Hamas is not invited to the meeting. It writes The politics.

– Hamas is a terrorist organization. Therefore, I cannot imagine that they have any role in an international meeting, said EU President Charles Michel.

Michel receives support from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

– Hamas is undoubtedly a terrorist organisation, and we must fight Hamas in the same way as all other terrorist organisations, she said.

The goal for the EU leaders is a so-called two-state solution, where both Israel and Palestine have their own state and can hopefully live side by side.

Norway’s new foreign minister Espen Barth Eide (Ap) will participate in the meeting.
