Toyota Prioritizes Hybrid Cars Over Electric Cars for Carbon Neutrality

Tokyo

Electric cars are becoming a trend in various parts of the world. Toyota considers this a good thing to support carbon neutrality, but there are several other important things to consider. What’s that?

A number of automotive manufacturers are aggressively introducing environmentally friendly cars with their own technology. Some are introducing hybrid technology, PHEV (plug-in hybrid vehicle), and BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle).

In Indonesia, it appears that Chinese manufacturers are more inclined towards pure electric cars, aka BEVs. Meanwhile, Japanese manufacturers appear to be prioritizing hybrid cars rather than electric cars. Toyota is one of them. Toyota already has seven hybrid car models in Indonesia. Meanwhile, there is one new electric car model, namely the bZ4X.

Regarding prioritizing hybrid cars over electric cars, Toyota has its own reasons. According to him, hybrid cars are one of the most appropriate paths to carbon neutrality at the moment.

“I think electric car technology is very good, but still limited. Our goal is to get to carbon neutrality as quickly and as widely as possible. That’s why we have to have a solution for 70 percent of non-BEV cars,” explained Asia DCEO, TMAP President Hao Quec Tien in the Round Table at Keio Plaza Hotel, Tokyo.

Hao further explained that currently electric cars are not the main choice for citizens in several Asian countries, including Indonesia. However, the popularity of electric cars has recently continued to increase because operational costs are considered cheaper.

“When I discuss with electric car consumers, they are their second or third vehicle, not their first. And when asked why they buy a BEV, they mostly answer because of running costs, because in each megacity, electricity costs are not that high,” added Hao.

Not just cost, mileage is also not a significant problem for electric car owners in urban areas. Even if they want to travel longer distances, they will not use an electric car, but their first car.

“So that’s the situation in the Asian region that I studied. But every region has good opportunities, especially in big city areas,” concluded Hao.
