ANPLast votes in the House of Representatives before the recess
NOS Nieuws•vandaag, 03:50
As expected, a majority of the House of Representatives wants the interest on the student debt of students who were covered by the loan system to be reduced. Various proposals to regulate this received sufficient support in the House of Representatives. For some students, the interest rate will increase from 0.46 percent to 2.56 percent from January 1. That can cost thousands of euros.
As expected, the House approved a plan to simplify the tax scheme for expats. The money raised should benefit the students who fell under the loan system, the so-called unlucky generation. Yesterday, the majority already signed up for the proposal from MP Omtzigt, GroenLinks/PvdA, Volt and the Christian Union. From 2029, this reduction should yield around 200 million euros annually.
Now highly educated foreign employees have a tax advantage compared to Dutch employees. So-called expats now do not have to pay tax on a maximum of 30 percent of their wages for five years. The proposal shortens that period to a maximum of twenty months. After that, a 20 percent scheme applies for 20 months, and a further 10 percent scheme for the 20 months after that.
It is not clear how much the interest rate for students should be reduced, and from when this should happen.
Freeze interest
The House also adopted a motion to freeze the interest on student loans of the unlucky generation for next year at this year’s level. The money should come from the aforementioned Omtzigt amendment. But Omtzigt wondered in Parliament whether his plans would generate enough money, and therefore voted against that motion himself. The amendment is mandatory for the government, the motion can be ignored by the government.
NOS Interest rate over the years
A proposal by D66 and the SP to bring the interest on student loans for the unlucky generation to 0 percent did not receive enough support. That plan should be funded from, among other things, an increase in VAT on ornamental flowers.
The House of Representatives is in recess from today, in the run-up to the House of Representatives elections next month. The last meeting lasted until 3:45 am, during which dozens of motions and amendments were voted on on numerous topics, ranging from international railway lines, the deployment of the police helicopter in the border region to the Chemours factory in Dordrecht.
Last week, students demonstrated at the House of Representatives against the interest rate increase:
