Journalist Detained in Russia for Violating Foreign Agents Act: Faces up to Five Years in Prison

Kurmasheva was charged with violating the Foreign Agents Act by the Investigative Committee, which functions as a criminal center in Russia.

In Russia, there is an official list of foreign agents, to which the Ministry of Justice can add virtually anyone it deems to be under foreign influence. These persons are then subject to stricter official control.

Kurmaševová, who, according to Radio Free Europe, lives in Prague and has been dealing with ethnic minorities in Russia’s Tatarstan and Bashkortostan for a long time, traveled to Russia for family reasons in May.

However, on her return trip in early June, authorities stopped her at the airport and confiscated both her American and Russian passports. Instead of returning the documents, they detained her last week. According to earlier reports, the journalist faces up to five years in prison.
