Category 1 Hurricane ‘Otis’ Weakens Over Guerrero, Mexico: Precautions Advised

Toluca, State of Mexico. October 25, 2023.

“Otis” was downgraded to a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is located on land over Guerrero and the phenomenon is expected to continue gradually weakening.

It is located on Guerrero, 20 km south-southeast of Ciudad Altamirano and 160 km north-northwest of Acapulco.

Wind gusts of 120 to 150 km/h, waves of 3 to 5 meters high and storm surge are expected in the Guerrero coastal areas, gradually decreasing.

Its wide circulation causes intense rains with occasional extraordinary rains in Guerrero; very heavy rains to intense punctually in Michoacán and the State of Mexico (southwest); and heavy rains in Morelos, Puebla (southwest) and Oaxaca (west). These rains could cause reduced visibility, landslides, flooding or flooding, as well as an increase in the levels of rivers and streams.

It is recommended that the general population take extreme precautions in the areas of the mentioned states due to rain, wind and waves (including maritime navigation) and follow the recommendations issued by the authorities of the National Civil Protection System, in each entity.
