If last winter was rather mild with only three episodes of snow, the City’s technical services presented, this Wednesday, October 25, the winter servicing plan which will be effective from November 1 and until 31 March. Through on-call duty, around fifty agents, from different technical departments of the City, will ensure snow removal or security of the roads in the event of ice.

Trucks, quads and pedestrian agents

“If the winter was as cold as the summer was hot, we risk going out,” says Brigitte Schneider, deputy mayor in charge of the works in particular. And to deal with inconveniences linked to snow or ice, six vehicles, quads (intended for the city center only) and pedestrian agents will be on the front line of winter weather. The opportunity also to recall that every resident must clear snow in front of their home. And for those who are physically unable to do so, it is always possible to contact the Municipal Social Action Center (CCAS).

Calcium chloride, salt or brine

“You have to use the right product and dose it correctly,” says Xavier Chaput, deputy director of technical services in charge of winter service. It also depends on the type of snow and the temperature. Just because you use more product doesn’t mean it’s more effective! » Two salt storage units, i.e. 600 tonnes, a brine production unit of 5,000 l, sodium chloride as well as sea salt (used in the quad salters) are already planned for the campaign winter. The trucks operate the priority circuits, serving the station and public buildings, as well as the eight village neighborhoods before ensuring snow removal on the secondary circuits. Without forgetting teams of pedestrians to take care of the areas around schools. “It’s a budget of €700,000 which is paid every year to acquire new machines and material resources,” underlines Patrick Thony, general director of technical services. Without forgetting €20 to €30,000 for the purchase of salt in Varangéville and €120,000 for the purchase of new blades and service equipment. »
