Study thesis from 2009 in the Department of Politics – International Politics – Region: Eastern Europe, Grade: 3, Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt am Main (Institute for Political Science), Course: Nationalism and Democracy, Language: German, Abstract: Introduction I will be in my term paper using the example of the former Yugoslav Republic of “Macedonia” (from now on: eYROM) argue that the most important characteristics of a cultural nation – namely language, culture, religion and descent – were emphasized by certain actors, especially after 1944, in order to lay the foundations of a ” to support the Macedonian nation. I will focus on the period from 1944 to 2001 with four sections: 1. The period from 1944-1952, in which a new “Macedonian” language was created or codified and cultural and scientific “Macedonian” institutions were founded; 2. The period from 1967-1986 in which an “autocephalous Macedonian Orthodox Church” (henceforth: AMOK) was founded and a national-oriented movement for a “free, independent and united Macedonia” emerged. In the constitutions of the constituent republic of the Yugoslav Federation of 1974 and especially of 1986, the “Macedonian” nation was obviously given a special position compared to the other nationalities of the state. 3. The introduction of the first constitution of 1991 after the independence of the former republic once again confirms and “establishes” the dominance of the “Macedonian” nation. 4. Regarding the Kosovo crisis and minority problems, a new constitution was introduced in 2001, which showed clear signs of forming the cultural nation into a state nation.
