Wilfred Genee names an insane amount for Neymar: ‘Then they are bankrupt’

René van der Gijp was not only surprised on Tuesday evening in Today Inside by Julian Draxler’s sudden departure from the field. The regular table guest and football follower also does not understand the amounts mentioned now that Neymar is injured for a long time. Presenter Wilfred Genee put forward an exorbitant amount during the broadcast.
“I read how much it costs now that Neymar has been out for so long. That simply costs 150 million, I understood,” Genee made the bridge from Draxler to the Brazilian attacker, who has to recuperate for months. “And they want the Brazilian association to pay for that,” Van der Gijp added. “Then the Brazilian association is bankrupt,” Genee replied with a booming laugh.
“Or should UEFA (actually FIFA, ed.) pay for that? If someone gets injured with his country,” Van der Gijp wondered in turn. “Look, that’s always a battle,” Johan Derksen joined the conversation. “Those clubs always pay high salaries. And they are obliged to give up the players. And every now and then they get players back injured. And that then becomes a lawyer’s hassle to recover the costs.”
Van der Gijp finally wondered who would now bear the costs. “Normally, as an association, you take out insurance for those players. But the Brazilian association called ten insurance companies and they all dropped the hook,” the analyst said with a quip. “They think: We’ve gone crazy. Isn’t that about anything? What would a guy like that earn in a year, 300 million?”
What amount in compensation?
Al-Hilal can request compensation from FIFA for Neymar, who was seriously injured last week during Brazil’s 2-0 international match defeat in Uruguay. A diagnosis showed that the 31-year-old star player has torn his anterior cruciate ligament, which means he will be out of action for months. However, Al-Hilal will not be satisfied with the amount of the fee, as the club cannot even cover Neymar’s monthly salary at best.
Now that disaster has struck Neymar again, Al-Hilal is looking at the possibility of being financially compensated. That option is there, as the former technician of FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain was injured during an official international match with the national team. The Brazilian Globo investigated what amount Al-Hilal can possibly expect.
The Brazilian medium spoke with Eduardo Carlezzo, an expert in international sports law. According to the specialist, FIFA pays out eighty million euros annually to clubs after player injuries during an international match. Injuries after practice matches are not reimbursed. The match between Brazil and Uruguay was played in the context of World Cup qualifying, which means Al-Hilal is eligible for compensation.
If the wealthy Saudi club receives the maximum compensation, it can soon add 7.5 million euros. That is a pittance compared to the annual salary that Neymar earns in Riyadh: no less than 106 million euros. A quick calculation shows that the compensation does not even cover Neymar’s monthly salary, as the right winger collects around 8.9 million euros monthly.
