See the differences between light mode and dark mode
The PÚBLICO website now has a dark version, using less energy

Starting today, you can read the news on site from PÚBLICO using a dark version (dark mode) do site. This initiative, made possible with the support of KIA, has numerous advantages, both in terms of sustainability and comfort and well-being for the user, responding to a desire and need, both for the newspaper and its readers.
The functionality – which until now was restricted to readers of AZUL, the section of PÚBLICO entirely dedicated to covering the climate emergency – is now extended to the main page and, progressively, to the entire site. In the words of the director, David Pontes: “Searching for new solutions that meet best practices and the interests of our readers is at the core of the newspaper. That’s what we did here.”
Readers can now choose light or dark mode for the news background. João Seabra, general director of Kia Portugal, highlights that this association, “constitutes a clear expression of the holistic sense with which Kia views sustainability, which is not limited to the innovations we develop in electric mobility. We seek to contribute to a more efficient and decarbonized daily life, and every gesture counts.”
The new functionality was inspired by feedback and in the suggestions of our readers, who already had this experience on part of the site. Dark Mode can also help save battery life on mobile devices with OLED screens, as dark pixels consume less energy than white ones, which can result in extended battery cycle life and, as a result, lower energy consumption.
This is a completely optional visual setting, giving the reader freedom to choose the mode they prefer. In addition to aesthetic issues or preferences, there are advantages in the reader’s comfort and well-being, as it reduces reading effort, improving eye comfort. Furthermore, it contributes to resting the brain when checking electronic devices before going to sleep, being an option that also favors accessibility for people with visual impairments.
