In New York, theChelsea Hotelin the same way as the Factory or the Studio 54, largely participated in forging the city’s arty legend. Inhabited by a host of artists, each more famous than the last, ranging from Jack Kerouac has Charles Bukowskiof Patti Smith (including numerous passages from his book Just Kids take place there) at Robert Mapplethorpe Passing by Janis Joplin et Andy Warhol (who filmed his experimental film there in 1966 Chelsea Girls to the sound of a signed soundtrack Velvet Underground), the place has just undergone a major renovation in Manhattan.

Expertly renovated, the changes are however not palpable from the outside, where we find the same facade made of red bricks and wrought iron balconies by the architect Philip Gengembre Hubert in 1883. And it is in order not to distort the spirit of the place that its trio of owners: Sean MacPherson, Ira Drukier et Ricard Born decided to take care of the interior renovation himself.

Restoring the period woodwork and moldings, the floor is covered with marble mosaic and certain works of the former residents are plastered on the walls. Divided into 14 increasing categories, the 155 rooms range from studios to two-bedroom apartments with kitchens. While on the decor side, tiger-print armchairs sit alongside Victorian-style rugs, vintage tapestries and purple velvet sofas.

With a total of three restaurants, the space still includes the famous The Quijotea table with Basque accents, where you can peck some Iberian Ham, grilled peppers and tortillas. THE Cafe Chelsea which, for its part, focuses on a bistro menu made with fresh oysters, tartare, Dauphiné ravioli and even roast chicken. Finally, the lobby bar offers cocktails and small plates to share.
