Details: Johnson, who became fourth nominee from the majority for the position of Speaker of the Lower House of the US Congress over the past three weeks, he has secured the support of 220 fellow party members, with the minimum required 218. All present representatives of the US Democratic Party, as in previous times, unanimously supported the leader of the faction, Hakeem Jeffries.

Mike Johnson, 51, has been in the House of Representatives since 2016 and was previously vice chairman of the Republican caucus. He represents one of the most conservative parishes in Louisiana and is himself considered a supporter of far-right views.
Johnson is also known for supporting former US President Donald Trump, who endorsed his candidacy. He led Trump’s legal defense during House impeachment and asked the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
The Republicans for Ukraine initiative gave Mike Johnson its lowest grade in terms of support for Ukraine – F. He voted only for Lend-Lease to Ukraine and consistently supported initiatives to reduce aid to Kyiv.
Recall that the House of Representatives remained without a speaker since October 3, when Kevin McCarthy lost his position as Speaker of the House of Representatives. This happened under pressure from the far-right wing of his Republican Party, where McCarthy was accused of collaborating with Democrats and a “secret deal” to help Ukraine.
After this, the Republicans nominated the far-right Jim Jordan and moderate Tom Emmerbut both were forced to withdraw their candidacies due to lack of support.
The US House of Representatives cannot pass new laws, including assistance to Ukraine, without a speaker. The temporary US federal budget only lasts until mid-November, so to avoid a shutdown, Congress must solve this problem. That is why the face of the speaker of the lower house of Congress is important for Kyiv.
