In the case of the fourth generation of its flagship with internal combustion engines, Škoda emphasizes the use of the characters of the new Modern Solid design language. Among the main design elements are the improved Matrix-LED headlights, whose appearance is characterized by a sharper shape, and the rear lamps with crystalline elements. “The Superb has traditionally shaped the design language of the Škoda brand, and the fourth generation of the model will continue to do so. The appearance of the car is characterized by sharply cut lines, clearly defined and dynamic proportions and a modern sculptural and crystalline style,” says Oliver Stefani, chief designer of Škoda Auto.
At the same time, the new Superb should remain faithful to the brand’s well-known values, such as practicality and spaciousness. After all, according to the car company, there has been an increase in headroom for passengers and an increase in the volume of the luggage compartment. Compared to its predecessor, the longer and higher novelty also comes with improved aerodynamic properties.
These are three rotary and push buttons below the infotainment display, each with a digital display of 32 millimeters in diameter. A multifunction panel with rotary controls provides access to various car functions. A new feature is the gearbox selector located directly on the steering column.
What about engines?
The fourth-generation Superb will be available with mild-hybrid technology for the first time. In the basic model with a 110 kW (150 hp) 1.5 TSI engine, there is a four-cylinder gasoline engine supplemented by a 48-volt belt-driven starter-generator and a 48-volt Li-Ion battery. This allows electrical energy to be recovered during braking. The energy obtained in this way is stored in the battery and can be used to increase the power of the internal combustion engine or to sail the vehicle with the engine off.
In addition to the 1.5 TSI engine, Škoda will offer two 2.0 TSI units with outputs of 150 kW (204 hp) and 195 kW (265 hp). Like the most powerful diesel – the 2.0 TDI unit with an output of 142 kW (193 hp) – the top petrol unit also comes with all-wheel drive as standard.
The range of engines will be closed by a weaker 2.0 TDI with an output of 110 kW (150 hp). All power units will be mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission as standard.
