Storm Otis: Mexico Braces for Extremely Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane

25 Oct 2023 at 09:01

Storm Otis has reached the west coast of Mexico. The storm could develop into an “extremely dangerous” hurricane, the American hurricane center NHC reports.

According to the NHC, Otis has strengthened into a Category 5 hurricane – the highest category – and is located 90 kilometers southeast of the seaside resort of Acapulco.

The NHC expects Otis to continue gaining strength and reach the Mexican coast early Wednesday morning (local time). Wind speeds of up to 270 kilometers per hour are expected.

Authorities in the state of Guerrero have called on the population to take precautions. Heavy rainfall often causes landslides and flooding in southern Mexico.
