Daylight had not yet dawned when the gendarmes and police arrived in large numbers this Wednesday morning in the squat of Saint-Martin-du-Touch in Toulouse. The Victoria center building has been occupied by squatters since the spring.

The evacuation is carried out by court order. The eviction notice was issued on August 4, 2023 but had not yet been implemented. At 6 a.m. this Wednesday morning, around thirty gendarmerie vehicles and police officers entered the building.

Men, families and children from Africa lived in this squat. Residents have been complaining of insecurity problems for several months: theft, burglaries, delinquency. The police had confirmed an increase in burglaries in this sector of Toulouse.

“It’s terrible. Since April, every day, at least one house is visited by thieves. We must act,” declared the neighborhood mayor Jean-Jacques Bolzan in The Dispatch in June.

The authorities have not yet announced what will become of the occupants of the squat.
