Research on the Mental Well-being of Young People After the Corona Crisis: Positive Findings and Areas of Concern

Education is always developing and so is research into education. In this section we discuss various research results. This time: Young after corona.

After the corona crisis, there were concerns about the mental health and well-being of Dutch children. A number of studies showed a deterioration in the mental health of young people in the Netherlands. The Trimbos Institute and Utrecht University examined students from groups 6, 7 and 8. The children answered questions about their mental health, school experiences, relationships with family members and friends and bullying.

In general, the children interviewed are satisfied: they give their lives a high rating. So good news. However, one in ten upper secondary students usually or always feels lonely, while one in six students is nervous in new situations. Girls give their lives a lower score (7.9) than boys (8.4). Girls feel lonely more often and experience stress about their school advice more often than boys. Furthermore, girls often have difficulty relaxing.

One in ten children is often bullied at school and almost 5 percent is often bullied online. Of upper secondary students, 44 percent say they play games to avoid thinking about unpleasant things, while 37 percent use social media for this. Children are coming into contact with digital resources at an increasingly young age and they often use them intensively. It is therefore important that children learn from an early age to deal with this in a healthy way. According to the researchers, teachers can help them with this.

During lessons, teachers can consider the use of social media and make students aware of the fact that they can also contact family, friends and confidants if they have unpleasant thoughts. According to the research, most children have a good relationship with family members and friends.

In short, the research results on mental well-being are cautiously positive. The upper secondary students are doing relatively well, but according to the researchers, sufficient attention must continue to be paid to the mental well-being of girls in particular.
