The number of wine producers in the Netherlands has increased significantly over the past five years. This is evident from figures from the Chamber of Commerce, including: 1Limburg writes about.

In the third quarter of this year, the Netherlands had 194 wine producers, more than 40 percent more than five years ago. Almost half of the wine growers are located in Gelderland and Limburg.

The brand awareness of Dutch wines is improving, according to the Association of Dutch Wine Producers. “This is due to the growing quality,” says a spokesperson for the trade association.

Increase in Limburg

In Limburg, the number of winegrowers has increased significantly over the past five years. In 2018, the Chamber of Commerce had 24 registered wine producers, this year 42.

The trade association sees that the arrival of new wine producers is contagious for starting entrepreneurs in the region. In addition, the landscape and climate play a role. “Limburg is traditionally a suitable wine region thanks to its southern location and the slopes. The Achterhoek is also hilly, which is advantageous for wine production,” says the spokesperson.

Only Groningen and North Brabant showed no increase over the past five years. According to the association, this is because the soil types in the western and northern Netherlands are less suitable for viticulture than lime or sandy soils.
