A House of Commons committee is asking executives of Canada’s major grocery chains to explain their plans to stabilize food prices.
The committee adopted a motion from the New Democratic Party (NDP) on Thursday to invite grocery store managers, and summon them if necessary, to testify about the measures taken by their companies to combat food inflation.
This comes after Industry Minister François-Philippe Champagne announced that companies had presented plans to the government to combat rising prices, which he said included cuts, price freezes and price alignment policies.
However, most CEOs have not confirmed the details of these plans and Minister Champagne recently said he wanted them to be more open with the public about their commitments.
The parliamentary committee is asking CEOs to submit their plans by November 2.
He also invites François-Philippe Champagne and the Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, to appear before the committee to answer questions.
