The case is under investigation. Emerson’s motives are currently unclear.

It later became clear that the pilot who last night tried to crash a plane with more than 80 people on board has already been charged with attempted murder.

American Joseph Emerson was off duty and traveling as an ordinary passenger when he broke into the cabin and tried to shut down the engines. The captain and co-pilot were able to stop him and he was taken to the back of the plane.

The plane made an emergency landing in Portland, and the suspect was immediately arrested. The airline revoked his license for life.
