The drills come as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, Iran and Russia prepare to send their foreign ministers to the Iranian capital Tehran for talks. This is a form of diplomacy launched by the Moscow authorities in 2020, when Azerbaijan and Armenia were at war over the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
Russia has long regarded the region as its own backyard, and the talks were seen as an attempt by Moscow to undermine the West’s growing influence in the region.
Agence France-Presse reported that Azerbaijan launched a 24-hour lightning offensive last month to regain control of the long-disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region and end decades of rule by Armenian separatists.
The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said 3,000 military personnel will take part in tactical exercises in the Azerbaijani capital Baku, the Nachi Chifan enclave between Iran and Armenia, and in territories recaptured from Armenian separatists.
Agence France-Presse said that dozens of artillery weapons and aviation aircraft will participate in this exercise called “Kemer 2023”.
The Baku authorities said their goal was to “ensure interoperability (among the allies).”
