Jakarta –
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto responded to the United States (US) dollar which was approaching IDR 16,000. According to Airlangga, this condition reflects the US dollar continuing to strengthen, not the weakening rupiah.
“This is not the rupiah weakening, the US dollar strengthening. That’s why it applies to all countries. That’s just anticipated,” he said at the 11th US-Indonesia Investment Summit at Mandarin Oriental, Jakarta, Tuesday (24/10/2023).
Meanwhile, to the Fiscal Policy Agency (BKF) of the Ministry of Finance, Febrio Kacaribu, said that his party continues to maintain close communication with Bank Indonesia regarding the strengthening of the US dollar. He said that the current global conditions were not easy.
Even so, Febrio believes that the depreciation of the rupiah against the US dollar is still better than other countries.
“We maintained that our rupiah until last month was still appreciating compared to the beginning of the year. So even though we depreciated IDR 15,800 today, it is still a 1% depreciation. Many other countries have experienced 10%, 8%,” he said.
Febrio also said that this condition did not occur because of domestic issues but rather the dollar which was indeed strengthening. “Why is the dollar strengthening? They need to finance the US deficit. The US deficit has widened very sharply, so this is a joint external factor,” he said.
Responding to this, Febrio said that Bank Indonesia had taken anticipatory steps by raising interest rates. Further policies from the government regarding this will also be announced soon. Febri also emphasized that even though the dollar strengthened, the APBN remained in a safe condition.
“The APBN is safe and will be safe. So we will convey it soon, but the APBN is on track,” he said.
“On the other hand, we see that the revenue side is also on track. Judging from the semester report, the expenditure side is also safe, even because we have had flexible management of the APBN for several years so we do have space,” he concluded.
