Minnesota (dpa) – Quarterback upstart Brock Purdy contributed significantly to the San Francisco 49ers’ defeat for the first time in his young NFL career. In the 17:22 loss against the Minnesota Vikings in the final quarter, Purdy threw the ball to an opponent twice.
After a series of five wins to start the NFL season, it was the second defeat in a row for the highly rated 49ers. The Vikings around quarterback Kirk Cousins are now back on track for the playoffs with three wins and four defeats. The team started the season with three bankruptcies.
“This league is difficult. A situation here, a situation there,” said Cousins in an ESPN interview after the close game. “We had a good plan. We didn’t even get sacked, really good job by our blockers.” Cousins finished the game with two touchdown passes and threw for a total of 378 yards, despite being without his primary receiving station in the absence of the injured Justin Jefferson. With two touchdowns and seven caught passes for 123 yards, Jordan Addison was a big success factor for the hosts, who increased the pressure on the Detroit Lions around Amon-Ra St. Brown at the top of the NFC North.
Purdy, who won the first ten NFL games as a starter, also showed a good performance in Minnesota for a long time. But when it mattered most in the final quarter, the 23-year-old made two momentous decisions. He finished the evening with 21 successful passes for 272 yards, one touchdown pass and two interceptions.
