Frida Karlsson’s Controversial Comments About Ruka and the Brussels Terror Attack

It was in one interview with SVT as Frida Karlsson was asked about her feelings about being a high-profile Swedish sports star after the terrorist attack in Brussels – if she felt safe traveling out and competing this winter.

Frida Karlsson replied: “It is obviously terrible what happened. At the same time, we travel to places like Ruka or Livigno. It’s like little crap places and maybe not the worst “terror sites”.

But that choice of words about the Finnish ski resort Ruka did not go down well in our eastern neighbor, to put it mildly.

When Expressen meets Frida Karlsson during the national team’s kick-off meeting in Stockholm on Monday, she is also well aware of the reactions.

Frida: “Many who are angry”

– Mmm, I have received quite a few angry messages from Finland today, says Frida Karlsson.

What do you feel around those reactions?

– The whole thing is a clear sign that I am an athlete and not a politician, says Frida Karlsson.

You mean you expressed yourself badly?

– Exactly. I meant that Ruka is a small place if you compare it to, for example, Brussels. And thus not as risky.

Frida Karlsson continues:

– And I have no problems whatsoever with Ruka. On the contrary, I think it’s great there.

Do you understand that people in Finland have become irritated?

– Yes, I absolutely understand their reaction. It would have been felt in my heart if someone had spoken badly about Sollefteå, where I am from. But that was absolutely not what I meant.

Frida’s apology to Finland

– I apologize here and now to the entire Finnish people. I was the one who formulated myself poorly.

It is also precisely Ruka that is the organizer of the World Cup premiere on the last weekend in November. And after the strong Finnish reactions, Frida Karlsson is prepared that she may have to answer for her choice of words there.

– Yes. But I really hope they don’t think I think Ruka is a shitty place, because I don’t. I just meant that it’s a small town.

Then Frida Karlsson smiles:

– I mean, in that case Sollefteå is a shitty place too.
