Pope Francis calls for war Hamas and Israel stopped. Pope Francis said war always creates destruction.
Reported by AFP, Monday (23/10/2023), Pope Francis made this call after delivering the Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square, Vatican, on Sunday (22/10) local time.
“War is always defeat, it is the destruction of human brotherhood. Brothers, stop! Stop!” said Pope Francis.
Apart from that, Pope Francis also called for more humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. He also called for the hostages to be released.
“I repeat my call for spaces to be opened, for humanitarian aid to continue to arrive, and for the hostages to be released,” he stressed.
War between Hamas and Israel split after the group that controls the Gaza Strip launched a deadly attack on the Jewish state on October 7. Israeli officials reported that more than 1,400 people, some of them civilians, were killed as a result of the Hamas attacks.
Israel then carried out massive air strikes against the Gaza Strip for more than two weeks to retaliate against Hamas attacks. Gaza health authority reports say more than 4,600 people died as a result of Israeli air strikes.
“War, any war that occurs in the world – I also think of the tormented Ukraine – is a defeat,” Pope Francis said in his statement.
Pope Francis Calls Biden
Meanwhile, according to Vatican authorities, Pope Francis also spoke via telephone with the President of the United States (US) Joe Biden on Sunday (22/10) local time. It was stated that Pope Francis and Biden discussed ‘the situation of conflict in the world and the need to identify paths to peace’.
The telephone conversation is said to have lasted around 20 minutes.
As a result of this war, awareness has increased about the humanitarian crisis occurring in the Gaza Strip, where Israel has cut off supplies of water, food and electricity.
The first humanitarian aid began entering the blockaded Gaza Strip on Saturday (21/10) local time. But United Nations (UN) officials said the 20 trucks allowed to cross the border were not enough considering the humanitarian situation which was a disaster for 2.4 million people.
