Cologne Takes Over Experimental Studio for Electronic Music From WDR

Cologne (dpa) – The city of Cologne has taken over an experimental studio for electronic music from Westdeutscher Rundfunk, which was made famous by Karlheinz Stockhausen in the 60s and 70s. Stockhausen (1928-2007) was a pioneer of electronic music and is considered one of the most important composers of the post-war period.

The city announced that a contract for the takeover was signed on Monday by Mayor Henriette Reker (independent) and WDR director Tom Buhrow. At the same time, the city also took over the rental agreement for the building in Cologne-Ossendorf, where the studio is located today. In the medium term, the city wants to put the studio into operation at a new location.

“With the Studio for Electronic Music, WDR made cultural history,” said Buhrow. “I am very pleased that this world-famous cultural asset is keeping its home in Cologne and will be a public, creative meeting place in the future.”
