Young Jewish women are preparing to risk their lives by volunteering to fight in an all-out war against the Palestinian armed faction Hamas. At least 100 women from the UK have converged on Israel, and women from around the world are re-enlisting in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) with dual nationality.
According to the Daily Mail on the 21st (local time), Moriah Menser (21), a female reservist with dual British-Israeli citizenship, canceled her plans to travel around the world and boarded a plane to Israel to re-enlist. She said Menser heard that her acquaintance, Tiferet Lapidot, 23, had gone missing in a Hamas terrorist attack on the 7th. She was worried that Lapidot might have been kidnapped by Hamas, but it turns out that Lapidot was one of the victims killed at a music festival in southern Israel.
Menser completed two years of service in the Israeli army five months ago. At the time of his service, he was attached to a combat unit. After he was discharged from the military, he spent time with his family in England and was planning a world tour to Australia, Thailand and South America when the Hamas airstrikes occurred. He quickly volunteered to re-enlist in the IDF and is preparing to be deployed to Israel’s northern front in preparation for an attack on southern Lebanon by the Lebanese armed faction Hezbollah. He will work in a surveillance unit and be tasked with detecting enemy incursions and missile or drone attacks across the border.
“I can’t back down,” Menser said. “Israel is my homeland just as Britain is my homeland,” he said. “If we do not protect Israel now, we will not be able to exist anywhere. “This is not just about fighting terrorism, it’s about fighting for our existence,” he said.
Another volunteer reservist, Mr. A (26), a dual British-Israeli citizen, was on a plane to Israel when Hamas attacked. The plane he was on was the last plane to land before Israeli airspace was closed. Mr. A was born in London and was a medical student studying medicine in Cyprus. He also completed two years of mandatory service in the IDF. When Hamas attacked, he immediately contacted the military and expressed his intention to re-enlist. He currently serves as an officer at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital, where dozens of wounded people are being treated.
Mr. A said, “There were several seriously injured patients, including a 25-year-old soldier, who went straight to the trauma ward. “There were a lot of gunshot wounds from the soldiers who had a gunfight with Hamas,” he said. “As a medical student, it wasn’t that shocking to see the injuries, but the most difficult thing was hearing that a patient in the intensive care unit wouldn’t be able to wake up.” “I don’t want to leave my country knowing it is in danger,” he said.

Mai Gutman (28), who has dual Australian-Israeli citizenship, is also one of the female reservists who volunteered to join the military. Gutmann said she stayed in Jerusalem while trying to participate in the music festival where the tragedy occurred on the 7th, and she escaped the catastrophe. But he couldn’t shake the thought that he could have been one of the victims in the disaster, and he was adamant that she could be evacuated to Australia but would not go. “I think that it could have been me, that my friends were there, that these were young people my age who just went out to have fun,” Gutmann said. “I have a moral obligation to be here.”
