This project is largely intended to make visiting this place as unattractive as possible to people who still glorify the Nazi dictator. The decision to hand over the building to the police was already taken at the end of 2019. It is planned that the building will house a police station, the district police department and a branch of the security academy. The police will be able to start work in the premises at the beginning of 2026.

The years-long dispute over ownership of the building was resolved only in 2017, when Austria’s highest court ruled that the government had the right to expropriate the building after its owner refused to sell it voluntarily. However, the suggestion that the building could be demolished was rejected.

The house has been rented by the Austrian Ministry of the Interior since 1972. During this time it was sublet to various charities in an effort to prevent any possibility of its being used to glorify Nazism.

In the northern Austrian city of Braunau, near the house where Adolf Hitler was born, a stone with the inscription “For peace, freedom and democracy, never again fascism, millions of dead are a warning” has been placed near the house where Adolf Hitler was born.

Since 2011, when the disabled care center moved out of the building, it has stood empty, but there is a memorial stone with the inscription “For freedom, democracy and freedom. No more fascism. Millions of the dead remind us of it” – it is still in place.

The Austrian government claims that moving the police into the building as defenders of civil liberties would be the best way to use it right now. However, this plan has also been criticized in society. Historian Florian Kotanko complained that this solution “completely lacks historical context”. He claims that the idea of the Ministry of the Interior to eliminate the “recognizability factor” of the building by simply rebuilding it “is not feasible”, Euronews writes.

“The demystification of this building should be a major part of the project,” added the historian, thus supporting the suggestion that the building should host an exhibition about the people who saved Jews from certain death during the Nazi era.
