The Legacy of Anšas Cīrulis: A Musical Performance and Exhibition by Anna Heinrichsones

Along with the performance, there will be an opportunity to view an exhibition created by the artist Anna Heinrichhosnes with elements of Anšas Cīrulis’ artworks. Both the exhibition and the performance were created with the aim of actualizing the invaluable contribution of the artist Anšas Cīrulis to Latvian culture.

The musical performance is dedicated to the outstanding Latvian graphic designer, master of applied arts and author of the Latvian national flag, Ansim Cīrulis (1883-1942). He was a dreamer with the grasp of a craftsman who managed to create a lot of works of art in his relatively short creative life, including ceilings in the accreditation rooms of the President of the State of Latvia in the Riga Palace and restored frescoes with allegorical figures in the lobby of the Dzintari Concert Hall. Unforgettably poignantly depicted the First World War in his refugee cycle. His creative work, which covers a wide range, has acquired the name – unique Latvianness.

All his life he dreamed of painting and high art, but the reality of life drew the artist to the earth – dishes, furniture, wall decorations. In Ansī Cīrūlī, it is as if two personalities are connected – a dreamer and a realist, which will be embodied in the performance by Vilis Daudzis and Jānis Šipkēvics (Shipsea).

The story of the creative personality of Anšas Cīrulis will be told with the musical language and folk songs of his contemporary, composer Jēkabs Graubiņš. In the works of both artists, every sign and idea is passionately Latvian, and each of them approached the greatness of folk songs with dreamlike confidence and faith. Latvian writings both visually, sonically and in phrases – this trinity is the basis of the musical performance about Ansi Cīruli.

In the visual landscape created by the artist Anna Heinrichsones, both the performance and the exhibition will testify to the Latvian of the 21st century that he is an artist who has stood the test of time and deserves to be updated. The skylark is like a bird that connects the earth with the sky, just like the skylark is an artist who has tangibly and visually embodied ideals and dreams in his works.

The creative team of the performance: musical director Sigvards Kļava, director Pēteris Krilovs, author of the libretto Nora Ikstena, scenographer Anna Heinrichsone.
