The political parties will not be happy with the calculation that Gupta Strategists made from the care paragraphs of the election manifestos. In particular, GroenLinks PvdA, Party for the Animals, SP and BBB (but also other parties in parts) have every reason to think twice.
If the healthcare plans for which there is a majority according to the healthcare paragraphs are implemented, healthcare expenditure will double. Not really a message that you can use to show off as a political party during election times. After all, doubling healthcare expenditure means a significant increase in healthcare premiums. Voters are not interested in this, regardless of how justified they would think it would be if healthcare workers were better rewarded, if the deductible was abolished, if nursing home capacity was increased or if oral care for adults was included in the basic package.
‘Lower growth in healthcare expenditure, we are no longer talking about cost reduction’
There appear to be no plans in the election manifestos that would lead to this lower growth in healthcare expenditure if policy remains unchanged, says Gupta. Lower so growth (the italics are Gupta’s), we are no longer talking about cost reduction. With regard to this unchanged policy: in the field of policy changes, a majority of the parties indicate that they want more attention to prevention, to assign a greater role to the general practitioner and to work on lower administrative burdens for healthcare providers. They will not be able to get the promised ideas financed without the insured being affected. Not to mention the fact that ‘wanting’ does not answer the question of how these wishes should be put into practice.
For the time being, only one conclusion is possible: the free beer is expensive.
