The fox that escaped from the prison island of Bastøy by ferry on Monday was caught in Moss on Friday. Then Mikkel Matros had taken the boat from Horten to Moss!

The very sea-accustomed – and rather tame – fox had once again snuck on board a vessel. This time in the cargo ship “Therese” which transports food between ASKO’s warehouses on either side of the Oslofjord.
And this fox loved food. Yes, the verb is in the past, because now the lurifax is on the eternal hunting grounds.
As VG wrote on Monday, the foxes on Bastøy are used to being hand-fed by the inmates on the island, and this is probably the same fox that snuck on board the ferry that runs between Bastøy and Horten where it jumped ashore.

It was chocolate that became Mikkel’s – or Mikkeline’s – path. It was shock ice that was eaten in the cage used by the wildlife commission in Moss to secure the escapee while it was on board the boat.
By then it already had a Middle Bar from the crew in it.
– We were just about to leave Horten and had disconnected the shore power and cables. I walked towards the bridge and scuttled like hell when a four-legged creature came straight out from under the lorry trolley, says Bjørnar Flaa Sørum to VG. He was an electrician on board on the trip.
“Therese”, named after the ski set Therese Johaug, is a so-called “autonomous sea drone” which will eventually sail unmanned. But for now there are people on board the battery-powered ship.
Intermediate bar
– I tried to trick him with a Middle Bar. When the paper crackled, it became very curious, it realized that food was being prepared. But it was so quick and to the point. It was a slightly terrifying moment. He took all of Mellombaren and hid again under the trolley, says Sørum.
Perhaps the red fox had heard that part of the fox tribe on Bastøya outside Horten is to be felled because there have become too many of them. Some of the foxes have become so tame that they are perceived as approachable and quite fussy about food. The fugitive was in the latter category.

Since “Therese” had to keep to the timetable, the ship left the quay in Horten on Friday evening, but Sørum says that they contacted the game board, who met them when they called at Moss.
The head of agriculture in Moss, Harald Urstad, says they sent two from their crew. They managed to catch the fox on board the Asko boat.
– Was euthanized
– After two or three attempts with goodies in the cage, the trap clapped and the door closed. It was chocolate that was eaten, he says to VG.
The cage has a plate that works so that the door closes when the fox steps on the plate.
– What happened to Mikkel?
– The fox was euthanized, says Urstad and adds that it is due to the fox’s ongoing behavior in addition to the fact that they are skeptical about releasing animals into new areas, including with a view to hunting grounds.
– There may be a bit of poor animal welfare.
– There is no doubt that this is the same fox that escaped from Bastøy?
– It seems very close in terms of the behaviour, concludes the head of agriculture who is responsible for the game board in the region.
