How could the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán affect European security? Jānis Dombrava, member of the Saeima, member of the chairman of the National Security Commission (NA) is judged in the TV24 program “Dienas personība ar Velta Puriņu”.
“Putin certainly hopes that he will have the opportunity to legitimize himself, because in recent months his opportunity to cooperate with the leaders of the Western world has dropped very significantly,”
The politician is very critical of the Hungarian president’s steps in trying to rehabilitate Putin:
“As critical as I am of the attempts of other countries’ politicians like Macron to save Putin’s face at a time when he had already started hostilities against Ukraine, such steps are absolutely critical.”
“At the same time, we have to understand that we have to look for communication channels with all European and NATO countries, including Hungary, because decisions regarding the security of NATO countries are made collectively. And so it is essential for us that all countries, whatever mistakes they make, and this is definitely a major, serious mistake, we need to talk to Hungary and try to convince them not to do this, no matter how bad their relationship is with the European Commission . It’s not an answer, it’s a step to nowhere,” says Dombrava.
“On the part of Russia, attempts to divide NATO countries happen all the time: trying to position Sweden in negotiations with Turkey, trying to position Hungary against the European Commission, attempts to show that the French still prefer Russians to Ukrainians. Such attempts happen all the time, it is a deliberate policy of Russia. The question is, what does Hungary want to achieve with such steps?” the politician wonders.
