London, Oct 22 (EFE).- Hundreds of people gathered this Sunday in London’s Trafalgar Square to demand the release of the hostages taken by the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas during its attack in Israel on October 7.
The protesters carried Israeli flags, banners with slogans such as “Bring them home” and photographs of the kidnapped people.
The Metropolitan Police of the British capital arrested two people who scolded the protesters for “racially aggravated” public order violations.
During the event, the British Minister for Territorial Balance, Housing and Communities, Michael Gove, addressed the participants to highlight that “the United Kingdom stands behind Israel.”
“There are no words to describe the suffering of the families who have seen their loved ones executed before them” and of those who “live in the hope that those who were living peacefully in their homes just two weeks ago and are now in a dungeon of Hamas are released,” the minister said.
“The world made a promise 75 years ago that it would never happen again. And what did we see a fortnight ago? The largest and most horrible massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, an act of evil and barbarity without parallel. We must stand united against it “We must defend life. We must bring the hostages home,” Gove added.
Ephraim Mirvis, chief rabbi of the Jewish congregations of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, for his part thanked the support for Israel expressed by the British royal family and the Government.
“His Majesty King Charles, thank you for your support. Prince of Wales, thank you for your support. Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, thank you for support. Opposition Leader, Sir Keir Starmer, thank you for your support,” said the religious leader.
“It is in moments like these that words matter. And, to all those friends from whom until now we have not heard a single word, your silence is deafening,” he added. EFE
