The coach of Ajax, which is going through a difficult phase, boarded a plane during the international break for a short holiday on the Spanish island. The trainer suffered a painful 4-3 defeat at FC Utrecht on Sunday afternoon.
“You are the coach of Ajax 24/7, people who have worked in my position will know what I mean,” Steijn responded in front of the ESPN camera before the match. “But in that first week I only had two of the 23 field players available at the club. Many players from Jong Ajax were also gone.
“It is customary at almost all clubs to have a few days off during the international match,” the coach continued. “Whether you are in Scheveningen, The Hague or Spain, you remain Ajax’s coach and are constantly working on that. I don’t really understand the problem. Do I understand anything about that criticism? No, I don’t understand that at all,” said Steijn, who took the plane at the start of the international break and only saw most of his players return to Amsterdam last Thursday.

Willem van Hanegem told last Friday in the latest episode of the Willem&Wessel podcast that he had heard that Steijn had been spotted dancing in Ibiza. “I wouldn’t have done that so quickly myself,” said De Kromme. Ajax collapsed the match with FC Utrechtin which the team from Amsterdam suffered a 4-3 defeat, to seventeenth place.
Steijn spoke several times with supervisory board advisor Louis van Gaal during the international break. “Have I also been to Noordwijk? I don’t think that is very relevant, but the contact between us is good. This has been the case for years, but has been strengthened again by this collaboration.”
