“They may try to present this gas as non-Russian, some kind of certificate of origin will be requested. Gazprom may say ‘this gas is ours, but it is not Russian, but of a different origin.'” The measure applies only to Russian gas. ” Plamen Dimitrov announced this to Bloomberg.
The forecasts are that – if the current volumes are maintained – Bulgaria will receive about BGN 2 billion per year from the transfer of Russian gas, and that Russian gas will become less competitive compared to alternative sources for Europe and that revenues for Russia will be cut.
It is possible that Hungary will try to challenge the decision in the Court of the EU, but Bulgartransgaz’s justification is for force majeure, similar to Gazprom’s justification for stopping gas supplies to Bulgaria in 2022 because of the demand for payments to be in rubles, explained Dimitrov.
“The case is similar. Bulgartransgaz can say – yes, the contract does not say anything about this fee, only that we are a Bulgarian company and comply with Bulgarian legislation. There is force majeure. The best option – and perhaps the goal – is “Gazprom” not to increase prices for Serbia and Hungary, not to reduce transit through Bulgaria, but simply to reduce its profit.
