(Reuters) – The United States will establish relations with the military junta in Niger, effectively recognizing the army’s takeover in a coup in July, the Financial Times reported on Sunday.
“We are engaging in the region in a manner consistent with our laws so that we can continue to guarantee security in the region,” said Judd Devermont, director of African Affairs at the National Security Council, quoted by the Financial Times.
France, which does not recognize the junta that overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum, has resolved to initiate the withdrawal of its troops from Niger this month.
