Ivana Uhlířová: The Best Theater Actress of Her Generation – A Conversation with a Comedy Genius

The statement that Ivana Uhlířová is the best theater actress of her generation may sound too ultimate, but its author, including the author of the interview, stands by it. In the twenty years that he has been following Ivana Uhlířová, he has enough reasons to make such a claim. She is a massive talent in a tiny body, an acting element transforming into different forms and shapes, a woman of deep emotions and comedic convulsions and gestures. She has acted brilliantly in many theater roles and has helped many films in her roles. A conversation with her is always fun, original and incomparable. That needs to be assessed.

The first question inspired me to visit the, um, toilet at your house. There, a portrait photograph of Václav Havel takes pride of place, I guess from the late 60s. Two things are striking about her. First, a dedication to Ivanka Václav a srdíčko. And secondly, the patch on his collar that says I like older women. I assume he didn’t mean you by the older woman.

I was in my thirties when we got it from him. And it has to do with the filming of Leaving. But I had, I dare say, such a special relationship with him. Whenever he was sick, he came to me. Or rather I followed him: I mean during the filming. That was in Villa Čerych in Česká Skalica, where he was taken care of by a nurse who brought him sausages, for example, while he was sick and it was forty degrees. I said: Why are you bringing him sausages when he’s sick? Well, nothing, so I started to take care of him a little too. So when the filming was going on and there was a lot, there was a break and Václav went to sit somewhere secluded and Jirka Kačírek, assistant director, came to me and said quietly: Ivanka, Mr. President would like to talk to you, which meant that I she went around the villa, went down the stairs and climbed the ladder into a room where he was lying sitting on such a bed…

Aha…

I was kind of his friend. Such a strange little boy that you loved to talk to. I think he might have enjoyed it. At the same time, I didn’t really realize that I was actually talking to some historical figure, it didn’t happen to me, and I’m not much of a collector of opportunities either. And no information. I did not take anything from him, nor did it occur to me; besides, I’m a political idiot, so it wouldn’t do me any good.

ECHO PORADA

Did it continue after that shoot?

Yes, they called me: Hello, this is the office of President Václav Havel, Mr. President is asking if you would like to go to a concert with him, Mrs. Daša is in Mauritius… I said: Yes. It’s just that it never occurred to me that when I go to a concert with Havel, I should, for example, wear a gown, but I was walking from a rehearsal, I had a torn cloth cable, and there was a red carpet, taxis, photographers, gunmen… Or maybe we were at a concert in St. Agnes Monastery, Mrs. Urbanová was singing there, next to me was some premier, pre-premier, post-premier, I didn’t know them at all, Václav introduced them to me, I didn’t know anything at all. But we were at the premiere of the movie Winton’s Trains, and there was Sir Winton, who was probably a hundred at the time, and then we sat in the lounge, just Václav, Sir Winton and I, and we talked, it was very nice.

And what did she say to him?

Like How was your journey, sir? Thus. Well, it wasn’t much of a conversation, but it was nice to be there. Or we went out for a beer with Václav and I told him, hey, Václav, I don’t care if you were president, I would treat you the same even if you were pope. I think he liked that.
