The Growth of Electric Vehicles and Charging Infrastructure in the Czech Republic

From the latest known statistics of the Association of Automobile Importers, it follows that from the beginning of the year to the end of September, people most often registered new fully electric models of the brands Tesla (1131), Škoda Auto (977), Volkswagen (468), Hyundai (406) and Mercedes-Benz (312). Among the registrations, there were also 35 luxury “electrics” from Porsche.

And these cars thus draw more and more energy from charging stations. For example, at ČEZ, consumption increased by 12 percent year-on-year to 2.3 million kilowatt hours in the first half of the year. Drivers recharged here more than 123,000 times and pumped in an average of 19 kilowatt hours of energy.

“Since the beginning of the year, 102 new racks have been added to our network. In the coming years, we should always add well over a hundred new racks per year,” says ČEZ spokesperson Martin Schreier. So far, more than one hundred million crowns per year have gone into the construction of charging infrastructure, and these budgets are expected to continue to grow in the coming years. The construction of the stations is financed by CEF grant programs, the Transport operational program and partly by ČEZ itself.

Thus, the energy company currently offers motorists 617 stands, of which 25 are ultra-fast with a power of 150 kilowatts or higher. However, in most places – i.e. at 458 stations and 134 racks – users have to be content with a maximum power of 50 kW for slow charging. So far, however, the chargers supply users with only about 1.5 percent of the maximum power reserved by ČEZ. Competitors PRE and E.ON are in a similar situation with more than two percent.

Pražská energetika is also gradually expanding the network of charging points. The investments mediated by her are supposed to be in the order of hundreds of millions. It currently operates 658 stations, 173 of which have been built so far this year. The busiest are those in Chodov and Černý Most. “In the past, we focused on developing a basic network of public charging stations, when the goal was to ensure accessible charging in Prague and throughout the Czech Republic. We are now focusing on improving the quality of the recharge service. We are building new charging stations with higher charging power and strengthening the performance of existing stations,” says company spokesperson Karel Hanzelka.

Part of the PRE stations are being strengthened so that they offer a power of over 100 kW. The consumption at the stations of this company was already in the first half of the year at 74 percent of the energy consumed for the whole of last year.

The competitor E.ON currently has 216 stations and is gradually building more, with ten to be added by the end of the year. Like other suppliers on the market, it records an increasing frequency of recharging and the associated higher energy consumption. In the first half of the year, drivers topped up at E.ON in more than 42,000 cases, which means a year-on-year increase of almost half. The volume of energy consumed grew even faster – by 63 percent – to 780 megawatts.

Energy companies are gradually announcing various partnerships with retail chains or fast food chains. ČEZ, for example, “plants” chargers around Tesco or McDonald’s branches, drivers find PRE stations in Lidl parking lots, and E.ON stands near some Penny branches.

Since electric cars on Czech roads are increasing and so is the frequency of recharging, energy companies are thinking about their own construction of services – such as refreshments – around the stations. “In the future, we are considering the concept of partner construction. We are inspired, for example, by foreign players who are preparing the background for additional services with their own efforts,” indicates PRE Hanzelka’s plans without further elaboration. ČEZ thinks similarly.

“In the coming years, in addition to expanding the network of stations, it would certainly be interesting to get even more out of highway locations. They have an extremely high frequency of traffic, but it will be necessary to improve the quality of rest facilities here,” adds Schreier.
