Mercedes-Benz Introduces Game-Changing Electric Truck: Could End Diesel-Powered Trucks in a Few Years

German automaker Mercedes-Benz has begun production of a version of its heavy-duty electric truck, which it says could end the need for traditional trucks powered by diesel engines within a few years.

After the Swedish truck and bus company Volvo, Mercedes has become the second European car company to enter the electric truck market, which is still a small market, despite the consensus of experts on the need to reduce emissions from diesel trucks in the world.

The new German truck is called the “E-Actrose 600”, and it will compete with the American truck Tesla Semi, which has been produced by the electric car manufacturer Tesla since 2022.

The Semi electric truck operates with three engines, and Tesla says that its power is three times that of a traditional diesel truck, and its range reaches 800 kilometers.

For its part, Mercedes-Benz has increased the payload of its new electric truck to 44 tons, although it is unable to accommodate a larger battery with a capacity of 600 kilowatt-hours, which allows the truck to travel a distance of up to about 500 kilometers before needing to recharge the battery.

Sales of electric trucks are still few in most major markets with the exception of China, where the number does not exceed a few hundred trucks in most countries.

Sales of electric trucks in the European Union, which includes 27 countries, amounted to about 2,000 trucks last year.

Mercedes-Benz says that the E-Aktrose truck can travel 1,000 kilometers per day, if the battery is recharged during the trip.
