The Japanese game console Nintendo DS is one of the best-selling consoles of all time. All of its iterations have sold approximately 154 million units worldwide, making it the second best-selling console in history. After all, there is nothing to be surprised about, Nintendo managed to combine favorable dimensions, the unconventional use of two LCD screens (one touchscreen), an affordable price and a plethora of exclusive titles. In essence, the handheld got its successor in the current Switch console, which can also be taken on the go, but in its case, one cannot talk about a compact device (with the exception of the Lite model).
Two displays and a powerful processor
If you miss your little pocket console, Ayaneo has a device that could ease your grief. Its full name is Ayaneo Flip DS, and above all, its design refers to the legendary console from Nintendo. The main role is played by the primary 7″ display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which is complemented by a smaller secondary panel, similar to the case of the DS. But you won’t find any weak hardware inside, on the contrary – the device is powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 7840U processor, which certainly can’t complain about the lack of performance.

For emulating old Nintendo DS games, this equipment is perhaps a bit overkill, which could have a negative effect on battery life. After all, emulators of the popular console are also available, for example, for mobile devices such as the flexible Galaxy Z Fold from Samsung, which can also approximate the experience of playing older titles. You can also use the Steam Deck to play dice from the iconic handheld, if you connect a second external display to it, as the DIYers from the channel managed to do Fresh Kook on YouTube.

The question remains whether we will ever see this device at all. Ayaneo is known for financing all its projects through crowdfunding campaigns, and even after successfully collecting money, it does not rush into production twice. Impatient customers are already waiting for a whole host of projects, and it doesn’t look like the company is going to break the bank to satisfy them all.
