Driver Arrested After Reckless High-Speed Crash Leaves Three Dead and Several Injured in Jersey City

A driver was arrested after an investigation revealed he was driving more than 100 mph on a Jersey City street just seconds before a violent crash that nearly totaled a sedan, leaving three people dead and three others seriously injured, according to authorities. .

Ziyang Wang faces a number of charges for the crash early Monday on Paterson Plank Road near Congress Street, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez stated in a news release. The incident occurred before 1 a.m., when two vehicles, a Kia Amanti sedan and a BMW X5 SUV, appeared to have collided head-on.

The video showed the consequences of the accident, with the smaller Kia completely destroyed and upright against a wall. The truck, driven by Wang, was in the middle of the street with the front end completely destroyed and crushed, and with the doors wide open.

The driver of the Kia, Dylan Weidenfeld, 26, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the sedan at the time of the accident.

There were four people in the BMW van along with Wang, who was driving, authorities said. A man and a woman riding in the back seat died as a result of the crash, investigators said. According to authorities, a third person in the back seat, a 19-year-old woman, was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.

A woman who was in the front seat of the truck was also injured, but is expected to survive.

Preliminary findings from the investigation showed that Wang, 23, who lives in Jersey City, was driving more than 100 mph on a stretch of Paterson Plank Road that has seen a series of fatal crashes over the past decade.

Wang, 23, who lives in Jersey City, was arrested at the hospital, where he will remain in custody until he is released. He was charged with three counts each of second-degree reckless homicide and death by automobile, as well as assault by automobile.
