Bihar Police Caught on Camera Throwing Traffic Accident Victims’ Bodies into River, Sparking Public Outrage

MUZAFFARPUR, KOMPAS.comPolice in Bihar, India, were caught on camera throwing half the bodies of traffic accident victims into a river.

The video, which has gone viral since Sunday (8/10/2023), immediately sparked public anger. The AFP news agency reported on Monday (9/10/2023) that the number of views of the first video reached 800,000.

In the video, three police officers can be seen carrying the victim’s body to the bridge barrier, lifting it, then throwing it into the river below. People around witnessed the incident.

The police in India are often considered corrupt and ineffective. Then, Bihar is the state with the most lawlessness in the country, also the poorest and least developed in India.

Senior police officer Rakesh Kumar in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar, told AFP that his men only threw the lower part of the body into the river because it was badly crushed by a speeding truck and could not be saved.

“It is the body of an elderly man who has not been identified. “The top part was sent for a post-mortem, but the bottom part was so badly damaged that they threw it into the canal,” continued Kumar.

“This is a big mistake. We have suspended the three police officers seen in the video.”

After the video went viral, local police took several parts of the victim’s body from the river, according to local media reports.
