Customers’ Climate Compensation: The Truth Behind Their Actions

– Our customers simply lie. So far, there is a big difference between what customers say and what they actually do.

The head of Norwegian, Geir Karlsen, is said to have stated this at a seminar this week, according to the report Today’s business.

Less than two percent

For flights through the airline Norwegian, customers can choose to pay extra for climate compensation. The money goes to projects that reduce carbon emissions, such as rainforest conservation in Peru and wind power development in Thailand, the business newspaper reports.

Last year, however, only 1.8 per cent of the company’s 18 million passengers chose to compensate for the climate emissions on their journey.

The insight and advisory company Kantar has carried out a survey which shows that half of the respondents say they are willing to pay extra to buy a product that is more sustainable. It does not reflect Norwegian’s latest figures.

Think more about your own finances

Eva Fosby Livgard, head of department at Kantar, tells Dagens Næringsliv that it is probably the case that people express that they are more concerned about the climate than they actually are, and that our actions are more linked to our own wallets than consideration for the climate.

The Norwegian CEO admittedly added that the interest in climate compensation is greater among leisure travelers than among the business world.
