“I feel good about myself.” These are more or less the last words of the interview with Quinten Timber and with them he provides a striking summary of his current state. The 22-year-old Feyenoord player is top both mentally and physically, partly thanks to the ‘Breakfast Club’. Not the movie, but more about that later.

“I personally started well. As a team we are too. The first two games were not very good, but after that we started playing better. I am happy with that,” Timber briefly looks back on Feyenoord’s start to this season. .

Timber plays a larger role in this than many previously thought. Halfway through last season, the midfielder, partly due to an injury, lost his place in the team to Mats Wieffer, who impressed and even advanced to the Dutch team.

The summer departure of Orkun Kökcü was then compensated for by the arrival of Ramiz Zerrouki, meaning Timber started the match for the Johan Cruijff Shield on the bench. However, Feyenoord’s midfield has now consisted of Timber, Wieffer and Calvin Stengs for weeks, partly because Zerrouki-Wieffer did not appear to be a happy combination.

Timber-Wieffer is. And Timber has not had to change much in his role on the field. “Ultimately, that means training hours and playing matches together. And then understanding each other better. Then you keep getting better.”

Breakfast Club

Physical development is also a requirement for improvement. The Breakfast Club in South Rotterdam contributes to this. “That is a group of boys, quite a large group now, who are already in the gym before breakfast. And they train things they want to get better at,” Timber explains.

The match between Feyenoord and Vitesse can be followed on Saturday from 9 p.m. via a live blog on NOS.nl, NPO Radio 1, NOS Teletekst or in the NOS app.

Shortly after the match, a summary of the match can be viewed online. An extensive summary of Feyenoord-Vitesse will follow from 10:25 PM on NPO 1 in Studio Sport Eredivisie.

“It’s different for every player. I do quite a lot of exercises for my back, my abdominal muscles and my feet, from which I have had injuries. You do notice that you are getting stronger. And before breakfast you have done all those exercises that you wouldn’t normally do.”

“It started a while ago. I joined last season. Actually, they were always going to take a different group of boys, but now it has really become a permanent group. It is on my own initiative, but if you want to come, you have to If you are not there, you will be punished.”

Always one percent better

“If you see other boys doing it, you want to join in,” Timber continues. “And then you want to be the best. We pull each other along. You get better and bond together. If you do that every morning, you get one percent better each time.”

Thanks to the Breakfast Club, Timber has made good progress last year, he believes. “That is ultimately what it is about. The idea is that when you look back a year, you can conclude that you have made progress, as a person and as a footballer.”

Still, Timber sees plenty of reasons to stay up extra early. “I have been through a lot. I have experienced injuries. I can say that I am satisfied with my development, but there is always room for improvement.”

‘Faith gets Jurriën through this’

Quinten Timber has currently put his injuries behind him, but the same cannot be said about his brother Jurriën. He is currently recovering at Arsenal from a serious injury to his anterior cruciate ligament. “The recovery is going well so far,” says Quinten.

“He is training hard, but it will take some time.” It must be frustrating to get injured in your second game for your new club, but according to Quinten, Jurriën remains optimistic. “Ultimately, you have no influence on this.”

“He is grateful to be at Arsenal now, a great team. He is enjoying himself. His teammates and coach support him every day. He has also spoken to players who have had these types of injuries. And he has the belief where he can hold on to. That will also get him through.”
