NEW JERSEY — Police in New Jersey say the driver seen in shocking video hitting a child while crossing an intersection, without the vehicle appearing to stop or barely slow down, has been arrested.
In the video, which some may find difficult to watch, the 11-year-old boy is seen crossing a street in North Bergen around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on his way to school. As he crosses the intersection of 76th Street and Hudson Avenue, a gray Ford Explorer flies through the stop sign and knocks him over. The driver leaves immediately, without even checking to see if the child was injured.
A woman pushing a baby stroller witnessed the hit-and-run incident up close and helped the child, who appeared to be in pain, but managed to escape on his own.
North Bergen Police announced Friday the arrest of Julio Seoane-Alamo, 57, the driver allegedly behind the wheel of a gray Ford Explorer involved in the hit-and-run.
The vehicle’s license plate number helped investigators locate the alleged driver responsible, police said.
Seoane-Alamo faces several criminal charges, including vehicular assault. Attorney information for the North Bergen man was not immediately known.
Video of the strike was captured by a home security camera, whose owner has his own experience recovering from a collision with a vehicle.
“I was hit by a car two years ago and I was on bed rest for a long time. This is something that catches my attention even more, that an adult does not take responsibility for something he did,” said Alex Cuervo, who said drivers They seem to think the stop sign in front of their house is a suggestion.
While our sister network NBC New York’s camera was recording, it captured a different gray SUV turning left without coming to a complete stop.
Cuervo said his camera was unable to capture the driver’s license plate, but police are hoping someone will see the footage and help them find the hit-and-run driver.
“I hope they are held accountable,” Cuervo said.
Police also hope to speak with the woman who witnessed the accident and helped the boy recover.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the North Bergen Police Department tip line.
